PLANT ARCHIVE | Cercis Canadensis (Forest Pansy)
Among deciduous trees, few are as charming as Cercis canadensis, with its distinctive heart-shaped leaves. Valued in both horticulture and landscape design, it’s leaves emerge a deep crimson and transition to a glowing amber in autumn, offering striking seasonal interest.
Commonly known as the ‘Forest Pansy’, this small to medium-sized ornamental tree is ever-changing with the seasons. In spring, it produces clusters of small pink flowers before sprouting its rich burgundy leaves that transform to green over summer. Native to North America, the Cercis Canadensis belongs to the Fabaceae family, also including peas and beans!
Growing conditions
Cercis Canadensis is best positioned in full sun to part shade. It requires moist, well-draining soil but is sensitive to prolonged wet conditions.
Care and maintenance
Once established, the Forest Pansy is very low maintenance. It will benefit from the application of fertiliser in late winter or early spring, preceding the emergence of new growth.
A stunning compact tree, the Cercis Canadensis is suitable for many settings. Whether as a potted feature tree, in a courtyard, or planted in a spacious garden bed, its uses are limitless.
