CEO and co-founder of WHITEFOX real estate, Marty Fox, and his fellow co-founder and wife, Charlotte, have listed their renovated Victorian-era estate in Melbourne’s Toorak with a price guide of $12 – $13 million. On par with the home’s sophisticated interiors are the numerous outdoor entertainment zones and leafy grounds, designed by Nathan Burkett Landscape Architecture.

“Nathan Burkett Landscape Architecture essentially matched at the rear of the house all of the hard work they had already put into the front garden,” Fox says. “Every single week, we get handwritten notes in our letterbox from people wanting to know who did the front garden. “Now we have that synergy between the back and front. It’s a garden that is great for your physical and mental wellbeing.”

Judd says it’s the surrounding gardens, however, that garner the most attention from visitors. Designed by award-winning landscape architect Nathan Burkett, who was given free rein, the property now features a stunning array of native plants, circular heated pool and entertaining zones that offer views of the surrounding hills.

Nathan Burkett’s gardens make coherent use of the block’s wedge shape, introducing “rooms” where you can sit inside the landscape. One is the lovely sunken lounge framed in layers of colour, another is the attractive covered al fresco area with its generous seating and barbecue. The raised pool, with its sea-green tiles and a sweet little surrounding moat (negating the need for a pool fence), is a sight.

Outside, Tarrant updated the existing pool to better complement the backyard and engaged landscape architect Nathan Burkett to design the pool house and garden. “The property sits on 1900-square-metres of land, creating an outlook onto the garden from almost every area in the home,” Tarrant says. “I love that you don’t feel like you’re in the inner city of Melbourne.”

Domain’s best swimming pools across Australia: While most buyers at the time were put off by this property’s slope, landscape architect Nathan Burkett saw an “opportunity to make something really interesting”. The sloping land lent itself to a wet-edge pool and spa overlooking the treetops, which helped to make full use of the block. It was installed with the help of Feature Pools, and has Italian glass mosaic tiles and self-cleaning capabilities.

A Victorian Home’s Whimsical + Winding Front Garden. A good front garden has the power to make, or break, a home. In the case of this circa 1890s residence in Toorak, the yard was ‘the ugly duckling’ of the street before a recent transformation by Nathan Burkett Landscape Architecture (NBLA).
