A seamless blend of old-world charm and modern design. This Queen Anne Federation bungalow in Malvern East has undergone a remarkable transformation, one that remains discreet from the street. The owners engaged architects Robson Rak to create a bold, contemporary addition at the rear, complemented by a complete redesign of the outdoor spaces by NBLA.
The result is a front garden that honours the home’s heritage character, while a strikingly modern landscape unfolds behind the Ficus at the rear. NBLA carefully retained select feature trees to give the front garden a sense of permanence, as though it had always existed. Meandering pathways and layered perennial plantings introduce a renewed sense of charm and movement to the entry. Seasonal colour is provided by Anemones, Salvia, and Hydrangeas, while Stachys and Viola form a soft, cohesive ground layer. Clipped Buxus spheres and cloud-pruned Camellia add a refined touch through subtle topiary.
Beyond the side gate, a hidden entertaining space reveals itself behind a lush hedge. Here, a dramatic infinity-edge pool is framed by vibrant plantings of Verbena and Limonium, their tones set against deep teal tiling. Raised garden beds feature sculptural Acer and Betula trees, while a sun-drenched tanning deck incorporates an outdoor shower, discreetly positioned behind a privacy wall. The transition from the traditional front garden to the contemporary rear creates a sense of discovery and surprise.
